As the first project within Sandia’s Vanguard program, the Astra supercomputer will investigate the viability of using the first 64-bit High-Performance Computing (HPC) Arm processors for the NNSA mission. The term Astra was selected from the phrase, “per aspera ad astra,” meaning “through hardships to the stars.” It is housed in 725E, Sandia’s first LEED Gold data center, that is equipped with a cooling system expected to save 16 million of gallons of water annually.
