BIOS is a non-volatile firmware used to perform hardware initialization during the booting process and to provide runtime services for operating systems and programs.BIOS is also known as the System BIOS, ROM BIOS or PC BIOSThe BIOS firmware comes pre-installed on a personal computer's system board, and it is the first software run when powered on.The BIOS in modern PCs initializes and tests the system hardware components, and loads a boot loader or an operating system from a mass memory device.
In the era of MS-DOS, the BIOS provided a hardware abstraction layer for the keyboard, display, and other input/output (I/O) devices that standardized an interface to application programs and the operating system.The BIOS includes instructions on how to load basic computer hardware and includes a test referred to as a POST (Power On Self Test) that helps verify the computer meets requirements to boot up properly. If the computer does not pass the POST, you will receive a combination of beeps indicating what is malfunctioning within the computer.The term BIOS was created by Gary Kildall and first appeared in the CP/M operating system in 1975.
