The first generation AppleTV is a bit long in the tooth and on its own is not capable of playing most high definition videos. However, by removing the WiFi adapter and adding a Broadcom CrystalHD card (model BCM70015) in its place, the first generation Apple TV can be converted into one of the best media players available today!.

Also, by using Crystalbuntu and booting to a USB thumb-drive, the internal hard drive and fan become redundant and can be removed. This will completely silence the AppleTV yet still allow it to play just about any HD video you may have.

This video will show the complete process to open the AppleTV, replace the Wifi adapter with a CrystalHD card, remove the Hard drive and fan, and put it all back together.

Enjoy!
