In this video, Jeremy Cioara covers how to recover the password on a Cisco router. Any system administrator who works with Cisco equipment should be familiar with this process: their equipment is so reliable that it will last for years, outlasting many sysadmins and their passwords, which often end up lost.

Cisco routers are some of the most reliable equipment you’ll encounter, but there’s a bit of a downside to this. The equipment usually lasts through multiple sysadmin switchovers and, because the router is often running for long periods without needing anything, passwords invariably get lost or forgotten. In this step by step walkthrough, you’ll learn a quick, straightforward process for recovering a password in this situation. You’ll begin by rebooting the router, then plug in a console cable between the router and the laptop. At this point, there are a series of commands you need to key in to retrieve the information you’re looking for.
