What are the best Oculus Link cable alternatives for Oculus Quest 2? We review the Stouchi fiber-optic cable for PCVR on Quest 2. You can buy this cable for $69.99 from Amazon US https://amzn.to/3j3hk5q and £79.99 from Amazon UK https://amzn.to/2YAePOE.
This is a premium quality fiber-optic cable that is specially designed for use with Oculus Link on the Oculus Quest and Quest 2 headset. Its length measures 5 meters, which is 16ft, and it connects via USB-C on both ends of the cable, so be sure you have a USB 3.0 USB-C port on your PCVR machine to get the best out of this cable.
This cable is just like the official Oculus Link cable, in that it is fiber-optic inside its braided cable. Unlike the official cable, it uses a braided material in the cable, which offers better flexibility and durability, whilst also making it tangle-free and easier to move with whilst you're in VR.
Both ends of the cable have a premium reflective USB-C connector on them. There is an elbow joint connector on one end, which is best connected to the headset, whilst on the other end the connector is straight to allow you to easily connect it into a USB-C port on your PCVR machine.
The cable comes with a velcro strap to help you coil and attach around the cable to keep it all together whilst it isn’t being used, and you can also use this to fix the cable to the side of your head strap too.
This cable supports up to 5Gbps data transfer speed and 3A of fast charging to your Quest or Quest 2 headset to keep it charged up whilst you play. This is more than enough for the Quest 2 headset, and I am sure this cable can reach its full potential with future headsets with higher bandwidth too.
I tested this cable on my PCVR machine. On the Oculus Cable test I managed to get up to 2.2 Gbps from this cable, which is pretty much the cap of my system and the Quest 2 headset. The speed of the cable will be likely limited by your Hard Drive, Drivers, GPU and CPU of your PCVR machine and on the physical hardware of the headset itself.
The braided cable did help to reduce any kinks in the cable whilst playing in VR, however it felt more a little too rigid to feed it well enough around the headset. Its velcro strap helped with attaching it to the very back of my halo head strap to even the weight distribution of the cable.
The Stouchi Oculus Link Cable retails for $70 from Amazon, and you can hit the link in the description below to learn more about it and to buy it.
It’s cost isn’t that much cheaper than the official 5meter fiber optic cable from Oculus, which retails for £89 in the UK or $79 in the US. But the same question applies for this cable, as it does for the cable from Oculus, and that is: is it worth buying a cable such as this one when a much cheaper USB 3.0 cable costing a third of the price performs just as well.
Right now, I would save your money and consider buying a cheaper USB 3.0 copper cable instead. Whether you buy an Official Oculus Link cable, or one like this cable from Stouchi, paying up to $80 seems far too much to ask when it really isn’t going to deliver you this speed over Oculus Link, at least right now anyway.
